6 Days to Kickoff!

After what seemed like an eternity since Auburn’s victory over Oregon in the BCS National Championship game, football season is finally returning for Seminole fans as the season opener fast approaches. Florida State will get set to play Louisiana-Monroe this Saturday. Kick-ff is set to take place at 3:30 pm. The Florida heat will surely be bearing down on Tallahassee, but head coach Jimbo Fisher doesn’t seemed worried about the weather.

The preseason camp officially ended with Saturday’s practice, and Fisher likes what he sees out on the field thus far. He has been quoted praising the effort, intensity, and execution by his players. Not surprisingly, the highly-touted freshman class for the Seminoles has been no less than impressive with their first couple practices. Nick O’Leary and Timmy Jernigan have been getting the most attention as of late though. the injury bug came for Jernigan this past saturday after an aggravated hip, but it shouldn’t last. “He’ll be good. By Monday or Tuesday he’ll be ready to roll”, head coach Fisher said.

It’s looking like a fun season is ahead for football fans in Tallahassee. We’ll be covering the Seminoles 2011 football season here all season long so stayed tuned with us as we do pre/post game analyses, player/team breakdowns, and tons of other Florida State Football coverage!

FSU Baseball: Mike Bell Hired as Pitching Coach

Yesterday, it was made official that former Oklahoma pitching coach Mike Bell has been hired as the new Florida State pitching coach. With the recent resignation of Jamey Shouppe after 21 years on the staff, the hunt for a replacement didn’t take long for the Seminole baseball team. More than eager to return to his Alma Mater, Bell is more than excited to help lead FSU to victory in the coming years. His resume is impressive enough, having helped the Sooners to the 2010 CWS shortly after his arrival. He’s also had two of his pitchers drafted in the first and second round of the MLB draft in each of the past two seasons. FSU is just as excited for his arrival since pitching seems to have been our biggest obstacle for, well, as long as anyone could remember. Hopes are high that he’ll turn the Seminole defense into just as much of a strength as their batting. Having already been eliminated from this year’s post season at the hands of Texas A&M in the Super Regional, only time will tell the difference Bell makes for the team. Regardless, FSU welcomes home Mike Bell with open arms and a 2012 College World Series title in mind.

FSU Baseball: Super Regional Game 3

I doubt Florida State’s offensive game could have been much better in their 23-9 routing of the Texas A&M Aggies yesterday during game 2 of the Tallahassee Super Regional series. A hot 5-run start in the top of the first inning helped the Seminoles seize control of the game from the very beginning. 6 runs in the bottom of the 3rd brought the Aggies back into the game, but their efforts to pull back into the game were stopped short when Justin Gonzalez cracked a 3-run home run during the 6th, bringing the Seminoles total to 14. The Noles sealed their win with 7 runs in the top of the 8th and Mack Waugh earning the save after 3 scoreless innings to end the baseball game. The spotlight couldn’t be brighter for both of these very talented teams, with the winner of this game advancing to the College World Series while the loser will have to watch from home. The rubber match between Florida State and Texas A&M is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. today. Florida State looks to start Hunter Scantling who has a chance to prove himself in the clutch. With the way A&M have been hitting this series, a strong showing on the mound is more than necessary. The Aggies will send out Michael Wacha to start, who boasts an 8-2 record with a 2.1 ERA. The Noles have their work cut out for them if they want to make their way to the CWS for their fourth time in five years.

FSU Baseball: Super Regionals

The Seminoles of Florida State finished their game against Alabama this afternoon after hailstorms postponed the matchup that started last evening. After pulling to a hefty 8-1 lead before the storms, the Noles came out today ready to head to Super Regionals, as they finished off the Crimson Tide to end the game with an 11-1 victory. An impressive showing on offense helped push Mike Martin’s team into the next round of the NCAA Tournament, which Florida State is set to host with their national seed. Mike McGee was on fire, coming out the game with three doubles under his belt as well as picking up the win after allowing just one earned run in five innings. Taiwan Easterling had a very good game at the plate with four hits on four appearances. The game was all but over when Jayce Boyd sent a 2-run homer over the left field wall in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Needless to say, Martin and his crew were pleased with the way the Seminoles came out and finished the game on the second day. With the pitching woes FSU has had lately, there’s no reason to be upset considering how well McGee was throwing. Scott Sitz now has 4 runless innings to add to his resume as well. Florida State must wait to see who their opponent for Super Regionals will be, as Texas A&M faces Arizona tonight at 7:30 pm. The winner of this game will travel to Tallahassee to battle the Noles for  a chance at a trip to Omaha.

Gameday! FSU vs. BCC

Well, today’s the first day of NCAA Tournament play for the Florida State Seminoles. The Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman College have made their way to Tallahassee to try and upset the regional hosts, who seem to be ready more than ever. Mike Martin and his pitching crew decided Hunter Scantling was the man to see the mound today, saving Sean Gilmartin for the difficult matchup against the University of Central Florida Knights in Saturday’s game. I doubt you could have asked for better weather on this Friday afternoon, save for the 100 degree heat that seems to follow you everywhere you go.

A couple of young guns seem to be the top choices as starter for today’s game, according to BCC head coach Mervyl Mendez. A choice hasn’t been made between freshman Scott Garner and sophomore slinger Gabriel Hernandez, both of which garner ERA’s of less than 3.5 on the season. If FSU can come out of the gates strong and get some runs on one of these guys in the early innings, that should relieve some pressure from Scantling on the mound. The first pitch is set to be thrown at 6 o’clock this evening, so be sure not to miss it!

In case the game isn’t enough entertainment for the day, post game activities will be going on all over Tallahassee. Personally, I’ll be making my way to Potbelly’s. The atmosphere there is always very comfortable, especially during happy hour. Granted, happy hour ends at 7 o’clock. But even afterwards, it still just seems to hit the spot for socializing and cooling off with a drink or two.

Dog Days: Wakulla Springs

There’s nothing quite like summertime in Florida. Maybe it’s just me, but I enjoy the blistering heat of the summer months that comes with life in the Sunshine State. A good sweat has never hurt anybody. However, with the temperature pushing triple digits on a regular basis, it’s hard to say that Florida’s heat hasn’t gotten the best of all of us at one point or another. If you’re trying to find a way to keep the sweltering heat at bay while in Tallahassee, a little place called Wakulla Springs has proven to be a popular spot.

Only about 30-45 minutes outside of Tallahassee, Wakulla Springs offers a number of outdoor activities that are sure to help you enjoy a hot summer day. Perhaps what Wakulla Springs State Park is best known for, as you might have guessed, is its fresh water spring. As one of the largest fresh water springs in the world, 250 gallons of fresh water are pumped from the spring into the Wakulla River’s flow. All guests may swim and snorkel in the natural pool created by the spring. This provides full-body summer refreshment, as the water that comes from the spring stays nice and cool at around 70 degrees, even through the heat of Florida’s summer. Hiking, glass-bottom boat tours, and scuba diving are all popular alternatives to taking a dip in the water while visiting this incredible park. One trip to Wakulla Springs should be more than enough to plan a return trip. All you’ll need is to pack yourself a picnic for family & friends, make a quick drive over to Crawfordville and beat the heat at Wakulla Springs.

FSU Baseball: #5 National Seed in NCAA Tourney

This weekend, the NCAA selection committee underwent the grueling process of choosing which schools around the country would be competing in the 2011 NCAA baseball tournament. Florida State fans will be happy to know that their Seminole baseball team has been chosen as the #5 national seed, now hosting a regional for the tournament. A trip to face the Virginia Cavaliers in the ACC baseball tournament Championship more than likely propelled FSU into this position, despite the 7-2 loss to what very well may be the best baseball team in the nation in UVA. Depending on how the Noles do during the earliest stage of the NCAA tournament, the national seeding could mean all the difference when the Super Regional round makes its way here. With summer in full swing, Tallahassee isn’t exactly as full as it usually is with its university residents. However, you’d be hard pressed to find a student or Tallahassee local who doesn’t enjoy a day out at Dick Howser Stadium when the Noles hit the field, especially with how well the team is doing this particular season. The Seminole baseball team will start their post-season run in the NCAA tournament on Friday evening, facing Bethune-Cookman College as their first opponent in the group stage.

Chris Singleton hoping to help FSU defend at full strength

Chris Singeton

Chris Singleton, 2009 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and this year’s runner up, is hoping to get full playing time in Friday’s matchup with VCU.  The Seminoles have survived the first 2 rounds with limited minutes from their great defender, but the Sweet 16 matchup with a very potent and motivated VCU team is going to test the nation’s top defensive team to it’s limits.

The Noles are playing Friday night in the  Sweet 16 vs. VCU!  A win there and a probable date with Kansas in the Elite 8 awaits.
